5 Ways to Cope with Financial and Work Related Stress and Anxiety

Conquering Stress and Anxiety with 5 Coping Strategies

Everyone has bad days or feels a bit down from time to time. It’s perfectly normal and a typical response to the everyday stress of work and life in general. However, if you are continually under stress because of workplace issues or financial worries, it will soon begin to impact on your health in a serious way. So if this sounds like your current situation, here are a few tips to help you through this difficult time.

The best way to ensure work and money problems don’t cause you unnecessary stress in the future is to learn the art of prioritising and practice better organisational skills.

Spot the Signs of Stress

It isn’t always easy to recognise the signs of stress in yourself. You might be so used to living on the edge and burning the candle at both ends that you assume everything is OK, whereas in reality those around you can see it is only a matter of time before you have a complete meltdown.
Typical signs of emotional stress include excessive anxiety, depression, feelings of agitation, frustration and irritation, and avoiding social situations like the plague. In terms of physical symptoms, stress usually causes sleep problems, digestive issues, a desire to drink or eat too much, and sometimes chest pains and dizziness.

Face Up to Your Fears

Burying your head in the sand will not solve anything. If your debt problems are spiralling out of control or you hate your job, the only way to make things right is to face your demons head on. This may involve admitting to others that you have a problem, which won’t be easy, but once you take this step, the only way is up.

Talk About Your Problems

Once you are ready to deal with the root cause of your stress, the next step is to find the right people to talk to. If the problem is work-related stress, talk to your manager or HR department to see what they can to help you deal with your issues.

Practice Relaxation Techniques

Hopefully you are now on the road to dealing with your problems and things are slowly improving. However, if your situation has reached crisis point, your problems are not going to disappear overnight, so it will be helpful to learn some relaxation techniques to enable you to better manage your stress. Yoga, deep breathing techniques and meditation are all very helpful stress-busting strategies. Exercise is also useful for mitigating stress, particularly work-related stress, so give them a go.

Prioritise and Organise

The best way to ensure work and money problems don’t cause you unnecessary stress in the future is to learn the art of prioritising and practice better organisational skills. Instead of allowing work to get on top of you, deal with tasks one at a time, in order of importance, and avoid debt by better organising your personal finances.
If stress is making you ill, don’t ignore the signs. Instead, make an appointment with your doctor and ask for help before you end up with a life-threatening health problem.
